DAZU CARVINGS

The International Department arranged for us to go to one of the nearby attractions: Dazu Rock Carvings. After a first try with no success (the road had a traffic jam in the morning) they took us again in the van , so that we would be able to see  the  Buddhist grottoes at Baodingshan, 20km northeast of Dazu. These  were carved during the Southern Song Dynasty, under the direction of monk Zhao Zhifeng, betweeen 1179 and 1249 AD.
The site is about 500m long from west to east, giving about one kilometer total length of sculptures; the carved areas are between 3 and 15 meters tall.
Religiously speaking, these reliefs and sculptures reflect an eclectic school of Esoteric Buddhism) that emphasized the cult of Liu Benzun (855 - 907), a saintly layman of Sichuan province who became revered for his austerities and spiritual perfection . Huayun , Pure Land and Chan are represented, admixed with Confucianism. Other scenes include Shakyamuni's birth  and death; the Wheel Of Reincarnation; Hell Punishments ; and popular deities.. The purpose of these reliefs is  devotional, dand idactic. There are  numerous quotations from the sutras, like illustrated sermons in stone; their theme is the pursuit of transcendence.

. Many scenes involve ordinary people and situations, and were used as parables or teaching devices. They illustrate Zhao's religious doctrine in a concrete and memorable way, originally for the monks who trained at the site..
more interesting information about this site.
